Reducing Water Usage
The most essential resource in the entire world is water. Without water, carbon-based life forms (including humans, mammals, and plants) cannot survive. Earth’s global population is expected to reach 8.1 billion by 2030. It has been estimated that in order to keep pace with the growing demand for food, 14 percent more freshwater will need to be withdrawn for agricultural purposes in the next 30 years.
One of the easiest, and yet most effective, things that we can do in our garden to help is to reduce water usage. Here are some tips on how to reduce water usage:
- Invest in a rain barrel to harvest rain water that can be used to water the garden.
- Install water-efficient sprinklers.
- Plant native water-wise plants.
- Reduce the amount of lawn area in your backyard because lawns generally require a lot of water. Consider replacing lawns with decking or plant groundcovers.
- Use compost for your garden. Compost helps to retain water in the soil in the root zone.
