Re-Introduce Natural Habitation
Urban sprawl has destroyed many areas of natural vegetation that once was a home for many birds and animals. Local eco-systems rely on the co-existence of plants and animals to achieve an equilibrium that is satisfactory to all parties. Problems are created whenever one part of the equation is removed.
Urban sprawl facts:
- The Golden Horseshoe section of Ontario is growing rapidly by roughly 115,000 people every year. In 15 years, this Golden Horseshoe will be the third largest urban region in North America following only New York and Los Angeles
- The (GTA) Greater Toronto Area has approved or developed land at a rate of 9,100 acres per year since 1989 A stark contrast between the City of Portland, Oregon, which implemented an urban growth limit in 1980, since then land consumption is at only 1,700 acres per.
- By 2031, the amount of delay experienced by drivers in the GTA will grow by an astonishing 300%
Plants help you to get back in touch with nature. Not only do plants help clean the air, but they consume carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas) and convert it back to breathable oxygen. When designing your own backyard garden, you should try to choose plants that are suitable to your local eco-system.
