Eco-Friendly Yard Care
Backyard maintainenance can very easily be free of hazardous materials and chemicals. It is a good idea to think about the eco-friendly options available to keep your yard healthy year round in order to prevent chemicals from being absorbed into the ground. There are many organic and green alternatives that work just as well as traditional garden chemicals.
Some Chemcial free lawn maintenance tips:
- Resist the urge to apply herbicides – they will kill innocent plants, make produce unsafe for human consumption, and leach into the water table. Instead, uproot your plants manually, or cover weeds with weed matting, or black plastic to starve them of sunlight.
- Develop healthy soil – leave grass clippings on your lawn help return nutrients to the soil naturally.
- Choose appropriate grasses – contact your municipality or township for detailed information on what the best grasses are in your geographic location.
- Raise mower blades – set blades on your lawn moser at 3-4". Tall grass assists in choking out weeds.
- Water deeply, not often – watering your lawn can sometimes be dependant on water bans/restrictions. Try to water only when absolutely necessary. Dead patches and dormant spots will green up eventually so don’t panic. If possible, water between the hours of midnight and 8 AM; a timer is a great device for late night watering.
- Remove thatch – De-thatch your lawn to remove all dead roots, stems, and organic debris. Choose grasses that are less likely to form thatch (rye and various fescues).
